Men pengene er testamenteret til en anden. Den rasende Charlie opsøger arvingen, som viser sig at være hans ukendte bror Raymond. Broderen er autistisk og han lever derfor i sin egen verden. I sin frustration kidnapper Charlie sin bror og begiver sig til Los Angeles. For Charlie bliver rejsen en vej til at finde sig selv. For Raymond åbner den en mulighed for at bryde isolationen. Heartless Charlie Babbitt expects a vast inheritance after his estranged father dies. But Raymond, his institutionalised older brother, someone he's been totally unaware of, is willed the entire fortune instead. Raymond is an 'autistic savant' with severely limited mental abilities in some areas but with genius gifts in others. When Charlie kidnaps Raymond, the crazy cross-country drive back to Los Angeles teaches them both a few lessons in life. For as they overcome their mutual distrust of each other, a deep bond is forged as they painfully share past memories, present problems and a possible shining future together.
'Rainman' is not just the story of two brothers, but a story of limitations, discovery and change. Raymond Babbitt, an autistic savant, is limited in his contact with the world. For Raymond, there is no hope for discovery or change. His kid brother, Charlie, is also limited. He's a selfish individual who refuses to love those who care for him or see things from their point of view. Charlie however, can change. And the catalyst for Charlie's transformation is non other than the inflexible Raymond.
Autistic Savant SyndromeThe word 'autistic' (self-involved) was first used by Dr Leo Kanner in 1943 to describe certain behavioural disorders. Autism is a rare disorder occurring 4 to 5 times in each 100,000 births and males 4 times more often that in females. Even more rare is the savant syndrome. About 10% of autistic people are considered savants due to the fact that they demonstrate certain mental abilities that often surpass the level of genius. Initially, people like Raymond were called 'Idiots Savants', from the French word savoir (to know). As the term is inaccurate as well as degrading, the condition is now simply called savant syndrome.
